Sri Lanka’s south coast has become a genuine hub for yoga teacher training, with established 200-hour and 300-hour programs running out of Ahangama, Hikkaduwa, and Arugam Bay. Before comparing schools, it’s worth knowing what “Yoga Alliance certified” actually means — most course listings skip this entirely.
We haven’t yet verified a teacher-training partner directly. Established programs currently running in the region include Barefoot Yoga School (Ahangama) and Spanda Institute (Hikkaduwa) — mentioned here for reference, not as lankaspirit partners, so verify current details directly with each school. Run a teacher training program in Sri Lanka? Get in touch — we’d rather add a handful of verified programs than pad this page.

This is the honesty gap most articles skip: Yoga Alliance is not a government licensing body. It’s an industry membership organization — schools register curricula against its hour requirements, and graduates register individually as RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher). It’s a genuinely useful quality signal, but self-regulated by the industry, not externally licensed the way a nursing certification would be.
200-hour (RYT-200): the foundational level most studios expect before you teach. 300-hour (RYT-300): advanced, usually requires 200-hour first. 500-hour: typically the combination of both, not a single program.
Commonly around $1,200/week including accommodation and meals — a 200-hour course (3–4 weeks) puts most programs around $3,500–5,000 total.
Look for a clear published curriculum (not vague headers), lead teachers with verifiable training, realistic class sizes, and a willingness to tell you honestly if you’re not ready for a 200-hour course yet.
Do I need years of experience before a teacher training? Most reputable 200-hour programs expect at least six months to a year of consistent personal practice.
Is Yoga Alliance certification required to teach? No — no legal requirement in most countries, including Sri Lanka. It’s a voluntary credential many studios prefer.
Can I combine teacher training with a retreat? Some schools build in surf or excursion time, but treat a genuine 200-hour course as a training commitment first. See our yoga retreats guide if a retreat, not a training, is what you want.
How is this different from a yoga retreat? A retreat is a guided practice experience; a teacher training is a structured course intended to prepare you to teach, with assessment and certification.
