50-Hour Yin Yoga Teacher Training — Hill Country

at Highland Ridge Ayurveda & Yoga · Kandy

Why this one

Program highlights

  • Set above Kandy Lake in the island's cooler hill country — a genuinely different climate and pace from the coastal training scene
  • Rooted in Taoist philosophy and meridian theory, not just longer holds of familiar postures
  • Small cohort of 12 for close attention during long, quiet holds
  • Ayurvedic consultations available on site if you want to add one during your stay
Set the right expectations

Is this training for you?

Good fit if
  • You already teach or practice yoga and want to add a genuine Yin specialty, not just a few slow postures
  • You're drawn to a quieter, more introspective training format than a fast-paced multi-modality week
  • You want the cooler hill-country climate as a deliberate change of pace from the coast
Look elsewhere if
  • You have no prior yoga background at all — this builds on existing teaching or long-term practice, not a foundational program
  • You want a high-energy, physically dynamic training — Yin is slow and still by design
  • You need external Yoga Alliance accreditation specifically for this training, rather than continuing-education hours
What you'll actually study

What you'll learn

Yin Philosophy & Taoist Theory — 10h

The philosophical roots of Yin practice — meridian theory, the concept of stress vs. stimulation on connective tissue, and how it differs from a Yang-style practice.

Functional Anatomy for Long Holds — 12h

How connective tissue, joints and fascia actually respond to sustained passive stretch, and the injury patterns specific to Yin's longer holds.

Sequencing & Meridian-Based Class Design — 12h

Building a full Yin class around a target meridian or organ system rather than a random sequence of long-hold postures.

Teaching Methodology & Verbal Cueing — 10h

How to hold space and cue during long silences — a different skill from cueing a flowing Vinyasa class.

Supervised Practice Teaching — 6h

Each participant plans and teaches a full Yin class to the cohort, with direct feedback.

Meet your lead teacher

Sanduni Wickramaratne

Certification

Program hours
50 hours
Certifying body
None — in-house certificate

Graduates receive an in-house 50-hour Yin Yoga completion certificate from Highland Ridge. This training is not currently affiliated with an external certifying body such as Yoga Alliance — many Yin-specific trainings register as continuing education hours toward an existing 200-hour certificate rather than a standalone credential, so confirm how your home studio or registry treats it before enrolling.

Best for
Travelers seeking a genuine ayurvedic treatment program rather than a spa-style massage, with cultural sightseeing close at hand.

A traditional ayurveda center above Kandy Lake, closer in spirit to a clinical panchakarma program than the relaxation-focused massage spots common on the coast. Consultations with an ayurvedic physician anchor each stay, with yoga and meditation woven around the treatment schedule.

Frequently asked questions

1Do I need an existing yoga certification to join?+
It's recommended but not an absolute requirement — most participants already teach or have a long personal practice. Long-term practitioners without a formal certificate are considered case by case; ask us when you enquire.
2Will this count as continuing education for my existing certification?+
Many registries and studios accept Yin-specific trainings like this as continuing education hours toward an existing 200-hour certificate, but policies vary — check with your home studio or registry before assuming it counts.
3Is Kandy's climate very different from the coast?+
Yes — noticeably cooler, especially in the evenings, given the elevation. Pack warmer layers than you would for a south-coast training.
4Can I add an ayurvedic consultation during the training?+
Yes, Highland Ridge runs ayurvedic consultations alongside this training — it's not included in the price but can be booked into an afternoon slot on request.
5Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?+
Citizens of many countries get visa-free entry or can apply for a low-cost ETA online before travelling. We'll confirm the latest requirements for your nationality once you enquire.
