7-Day Beginner Surf Camp — Weligama Bay

at Reef Camp Weligama · Weligama

Why this one

Retreat highlights

  • 10 lessons across 7 days on Weligama's beginner-friendly break, small enough waves to actually build muscle memory
  • Daily video review — you see your own pop-up and positioning, not just hear feedback
  • Board quiver on site, sized up as you progress through the week
  • Evening yoga is there most nights, but it's recovery, not a parallel program you're expected to keep up with

Set the right expectations

Is this retreat for you?

Good fit if
  • You've never surfed, or have only tried it a handful of times
  • You want structured daily coaching, not a board rental and a shrug
  • You're happy with a casual, social camp atmosphere rather than a quiet retreat
Look elsewhere if
  • You're already comfortable catching green waves and want a bigger, more powerful break — look at Arugam Bay in season instead
  • You want yoga to be the main event — this is a surf camp with yoga folded in, not the other way around
  • You want a private, quiet stay — Reef Camp is social by design
Before you go

Who's leading it

Meet your facilitator

Nadun Perera
Head Surf Coach
Grew up surfing Weligama Bay and has spent the last several seasons coaching first-timers specifically — his focus is less on advanced technique and more on the handful of habits that make or break someone's first week on a board: paddle positioning, timing the pop-up, and reading which waves are actually worth going for.

Best for
First-time and improving surfers who want a structured week of daily coaching, with yoga as a bonus rather than the reason they came.

A dedicated surf camp on Weligama Bay, built around daily lessons and a full board quiver rather than a studio or shala with surf as an afterthought. Runs its own week-long camps for beginners and improvers, with yoga offered most evenings as recovery, not the main event.

Frequently asked questions

1I've genuinely never stood on a board — is this too advanced for me?+
No — this camp is built specifically for that. Weligama's inside break is one of the more forgiving beginner waves on the south coast, and the lesson structure assumes zero prior experience.
2Do I need to be a strong swimmer?+
Comfortable swimming ability is required for safety, but you don't need to be an athlete. Boards are buoyant and lessons stay in shallow, patrolled water.
3Is the yoga mandatory?+
No — it's offered most evenings and most people enjoy it after a day in the water, but nobody's tracking attendance.
4What if I want more than 10 lessons?+
Additional lessons or board rental beyond the included week can usually be arranged directly with the camp once you're there.
5How do I get to Weligama from the airport?+
Fly into Colombo (CMB), then it's roughly a 2.5-hour drive down the south coast. We can help arrange transport — ask when you enquire.
