Sri Lanka sits between two monsoon systems that flip direction twice a year. The southwest monsoon (May–Sep) blows offshore on the east coast and onshore on the south — the reverse happens November through February. That’s the entire mechanism: both coasts have swell most of the year, what changes is which one has clean, wind-groomed conditions.
Sri Lanka is a genuinely good, warm-water destination — not Indonesia or the Mentawais in wave size or barrel consistency. What it does uniquely well: warm water year-round, an unintimidating learning curve, and an established yoga scene layered directly on top. If you want the biggest waves on earth, this isn’t that trip.
Do I need to choose between the south coast and Arugam Bay? Their seasons are opposite, so most visitors pick one coast per trip rather than chasing both swells in one visit.
Is Sri Lanka good for complete beginners? Yes — Weligama and Hiriketiya are built around learner-friendly beach breaks.
Can I surf and do a yoga retreat in the same week? Yes — this is the south coast’s real strength. See our yoga retreats guide.
What’s the water temperature like? Warm year-round — a rash guard is usually enough, no wetsuit needed.
