Sri Lanka in December: what to expect before you book

December is peak season on the south coast — but prices roughly double after the 20th. What the weather, crowds and whale season actually look like.

Sri Lanka in December: what to expect before you book

December is the start of peak season on the south and west coasts, the hill country and the cultural triangle — dry, sunny, and the best month of the year for Mirissa whale watching alongside January-March. The catch is price: the first two weeks of the month are genuinely good value, then rooms on the south coast commonly double or triple from around December 20 through New Year as Christmas and holiday demand peaks. Book accommodation, the Kandy-Ella train and Yala safari jeeps at least 4-6 weeks out if you're traveling in the back half of the month.

December opens peak season on the south and west coasts, the hill country and the cultural triangle — the exact regions most first-time trips are built around. The weather is genuinely at its best. The price you pay for that weather depends almost entirely on which half of the month you land in.

The month, in four points:

  • Two different Decembers. The first two weeks carry none of the Christmas premium; from the 20th, south-coast rates commonly double or triple.
  • Whale watching properly underway. Mirissa’s season is in full swing by December, not just starting — blue and sperm whales both regularly sighted.
  • Wildlife concentrates. Yala and Udawalawe’s dry conditions pull animals toward the remaining water sources, including real leopard odds.
  • East coast still shut. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are in their wet season — the exact opposite of the south coast’s peak.

Weather in December: reliably dry, reliably warm

South coast temperatures run a steady 29-31°C through December, with the southwest monsoon’s rains largely finished by this point. Early December can still carry the odd shower left over from November, but by mid-month the south and west coasts, hill country and cultural triangle are solidly into their dry season proper — the same pattern our full best-time-to-visit guide tracks month by month across all four regions. The hill country stays noticeably cooler, 19-22°C, and worth packing a layer for if Ella or Nuwara Eliya is on the route. The east coast and far north are the exception, still running their own wet season.

The price split that actually matters

This is the detail worth planning around: the first two weeks of December carry none of the Christmas premium. Dry-season weather, thinner crowds, and pricing close to November’s. Then, roughly from December 20 through the first few days of January, south coast accommodation commonly runs double to triple its November rate as Christmas and New Year demand peaks. Galle Fort, Mirissa Beach and Unawatuna all fill up fast from the 20th onward. If your dates are flexible at all, landing before the 20th gets you the same weather this whole guide describes at a meaningfully lower cost.

What to book ahead

  1. South-coast accommodation over the holidays — anything well-reviewed under €100/night in Mirissa, Unawatuna or Weligama needs booking well before December 20 if the trip spans Christmas or New Year.
  2. Whale watching at Mirissa — the season is building toward its January peak; morning departures over the holiday period benefit from a few days’ to a week’s notice.
  3. Kandy-Ella train, first class — the observation carriage sells out specifically for the holiday window.
  4. Yala or Udawalawe safari jeeps — dry conditions concentrate wildlife, and demand concentrates with it over Christmas and New Year.

Whale watching starts in earnest

Mirissa’s whale-watching season begins in late November and December is a genuinely strong month for it — blue whales and sperm whales are both regularly sighted, and the season only improves from here through its January-March peak. See our whale watching guide for boat operator standards and what a responsible tour actually looks like, since not every operator on that stretch of coast runs one.

What’s good this month beyond the beach

Yala and Udawalawe are dry and at their most accessible in December, which tends to concentrate wildlife — including a real chance of a leopard sighting — around the remaining water sources. The cultural triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa) runs the same dry-season window as the south coast, so a multi-region December itinerary genuinely works without fighting the weather on any leg, as long as the east coast and Arugam Bay stay off the list.

What to skip this month

The east coast and Arugam Bay are in their wet season through December — the exact opposite of the south coast’s peak. If a full island trip is the plan, treat that leg as its own separate visit in the May-September window rather than squeezing it into a December itinerary. LankaSpirit's take

The smartest version of a December trip isn't the one most people book. Arriving before the 20th gets you the same dry, sunny weather as Christmas week at a fraction of the price and with noticeably thinner crowds at Galle Fort and on the whale boats — the island doesn't actually change on December 20th, the booking calendar does.

Frequently asked

Is December a good time to visit Sri Lanka?+
Yes — it's one of the best weather months of the year for the south coast, hill country and cultural triangle, and Mirissa's whale-watching season is properly underway. The trade-off is price and crowds, both of which rise sharply in the back half of the month.
How much more expensive does Sri Lanka get around Christmas?+
South coast accommodation commonly runs double to triple its November rate from around December 20 through the first days of January. The first two weeks of December don't carry that premium — same dry-season weather, meaningfully lower prices.
Can I see whales in Sri Lanka in December?+
Yes — Mirissa's whale-watching season starts in earnest in late November and runs through April, with blue whales and sperm whales both being sighted. December is a genuinely good month for it, not just the shoulder of the season.
How far ahead should I book a December trip to Sri Lanka?+
For travel in the second half of December, 4-6 weeks minimum for accommodation, the Kandy-Ella train, and Yala safari jeeps — all three sell out well ahead of the holiday period specifically.
Is the east coast worth visiting in December?+
No, not this month specifically — December falls in the east coast and Arugam Bay's wet season, the mirror image of the south coast's dry season. If your trip includes Trincomalee or Arugam Bay, that's a May-September trip, not a December one.
What's the single biggest money-saver for a December trip?+
Flexible dates. Shifting arrival to before December 20 instead of over Christmas week typically saves double to triple on south-coast accommodation for identical weather — the island doesn't change on the 20th, the booking calendar does.
