What a yoga training involves

A yoga teacher training teaches you to lead classes safely and with confidence: asana and alignment, sequencing, pranayama and meditation, anatomy, yoga philosophy, and a supervised practicum where you teach your fellow students. Most people start with a 200-hour foundational course. Teachers who already hold a 200-hour certificate move on to a 300-hour advanced training, and some schools offer shorter 50 to 100-hour specialty courses in Yin, breathwork or other styles.

Sri Lanka's yoga scene is smaller than Rishikesh or Ubud, but it is growing fast, and the south coast now has several well-established schools. Programs differ more in format than in hours. Some include accommodation and meals, some charge tuition only, and some start with online study before you fly. This page lists every program open on lankaspirit, then compares the formats, costs, curricula and credentials so you can choose before you pay a deposit.

Who this training is for

Committed students who want to deepen their practice

You don't have to want to teach. Many students join to understand yoga properly. Most schools ask for some months of regular practice and accept complete beginners to teaching.

People who want to teach

A 200-hour training gives you the foundation to teach group classes, plus the tools to sequence, adjust and manage a room. Expect to keep practising teaching for months after you graduate.

Existing teachers

A 300-hour or specialty course adds advanced sequencing, anatomy and a niche such as Yin or yoga therapy. Many teachers also use short courses for continuing-education hours.

Career changers

Possible, but plan for a longer road. A teacher training rarely replaces a salary on its own. Most new teachers build their hours through community classes, assisting and a second income before going full time.

Training levels

200-hour foundational

The standard first credential: asana, pranayama, anatomy, philosophy, teaching methodology and a supervised practicum. Open to anyone with an established practice, and the level most Yoga Alliance registered schools offer.

300-hour advanced

For teachers who hold a 200-hour certificate. It covers deeper sequencing, injury-aware anatomy, subtle body, and often a specialization. A 200-hour and a 300-hour from registered schools can add up to a 500-hour registration.

100-hour and 50-hour specialty

Short courses in Yin, yoga therapy or breathwork. They add hours or a niche to an existing certification rather than replace a 200-hour course.

Yoga + breathwork or Yin teacher training (200 hours)

A full 200-hour training with a strong Yin or breathwork component. Check how the school's Yoga Alliance registration applies to the yoga teaching credential.

Yoga styles taught in Sri Lanka

Vinyasa

Flowing sequences linked to the breath. It is the most common style on offer, often taught with a school's own method, such as an elemental or anatomy-led approach.

Hatha

A slower, alignment-focused style with held postures. Many trainings combine Hatha and Vinyasa so you can teach both.

Yin and restorative

Long holds in passive postures that target connective tissue and calm the nervous system. Some schools teach Yin alongside Vinyasa in a single 200-hour course.

Ashtanga

A set sequence practised in a fixed order. Intensive Ashtanga courses of about 75 hours also run in Sri Lanka.

Yoga therapy and Yin therapy

Teaching yoga for healing, with acupressure points, meridians or yoga nidra. These courses are often 100 hours.

Pranayama and meditation

Breathing practices and meditation are taught inside most 200-hour courses. Look at how much time is given to practice versus theory.

How to choose a program

1

Yoga Alliance status, in writing

Many Sri Lanka schools are registered with Yoga Alliance as a Registered Yoga School (RYS), but not all. Ask for the school's profile link and check it yourself. Registration is what lets you register as a teacher afterward.

2

Total cost, not headline price

A €2,100 tuition-only course and a €3,500 all-inclusive course can end up costing about the same. Add accommodation, meals and any extras to see the real number.

3

Who is teaching

Look at the lead teachers' own training, years of experience and Yoga Alliance level (E-RYT or similar). Specialists for anatomy, Yin or philosophy are a good sign.

4

Style and method

Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin and Ashtanga prepare you to teach different classes. Choose the style you want to teach, then pick the school.

5

Group size

Cohorts of 10 to 15 leave room for individual feedback during the practicum. Ask how many teachers will be in the room.

6

Supervised teaching time

Ask how many hours you will spend teaching real classes while a teacher observes. If a program can't give you a number, treat that as an answer.

7

Schedule and days off

A 200-hour course in three weeks is intense. Check how many days off you get and whether you can recover sick days or missed sessions.

8

Food and accommodation

Some schools keep you in one compound and others let you choose your own stay. Decide which suits you, and check dietary needs and room options.

9

What happens after

Mentorship, internships and assistant roles turn a certificate into teaching hours. Ask what is included and for how long.

10

Try the teacher first

Join a class with the lead teacher or book an introductory call before you commit. How someone teaches tells you more than any brochure.

After you graduate

Register with Yoga Alliance

If your school is registered, you can apply for RYT 200 status and list your profile. Registration is optional but often asked for by studios and insurers.

Start teaching

Community classes, donation classes, studios, retreats and online classes are the usual first steps. Many new teachers begin by assisting a more experienced teacher.

Add a specialty

Yin, prenatal, breathwork, sound or yoga therapy are common next courses. Short trainings also count toward continuing-education hours.

Plan for 300 hours

After a year or more of teaching, an advanced training covers material you won't see in a first course. Combined hours from registered 200 and 300-hour courses can lead to RYT 500.

Cover the basics

Get teacher liability insurance in the country where you will teach, and have a waiver and health form for your students.

List your classes

Teachers in Sri Lanka can list experiences, retreats and trainings on lankaspirit and receive bookings directly.

Plan your trip

Best time to train

The south coast is driest from roughly November to April. Popular cohorts fill weeks ahead and accommodation is dearest then, so book both early.

Where to base yourself

Most programs run in the Ahangama, Midigama, Weligama and Mirissa area or around Hikkaduwa and Galle. Pick accommodation within walking or scooter distance of the venue, since training days start early.

Getting there

Colombo airport is about two to two and a half hours from Ahangama by car. The train from Colombo to the south coast is the cheaper option, but check the current timetable first.

Arrive before the first day

Plan to land a day or two early. Many schools ask you to arrive the evening before, and jet lag makes the first morning practice harder.

Visa

Many nationalities need an ETA before travelling. Apply online before your flight and check the current rules for your passport.

Combine it with a retreat

Many students book a retreat week before or after the course, so the intensity of the training is balanced by a slower stretch.

Questions people ask

How much does a yoga teacher training in Sri Lanka cost?

A 200-hour course costs about €2,100 to €2,400 for tuition only, or roughly €2,000 to €3,900 with accommodation and meals, depending on the room. Hybrid courses with online modules reach about €4,300, 300-hour trainings run about €2,500 to €4,000, and 100-hour courses cost about €1,200 to €1,600. Add flights, the ETA and insurance.

How long is a 200-hour yoga teacher training in Sri Lanka?

In-person courses run 18 to 23 days. Hybrid programs split the 200 hours between online modules before you travel and about 18 days on site. Shorter 100-hour courses take 11 to 13 days.

Are Sri Lanka teacher trainings recognised by Yoga Alliance?

Many are. Several schools in Sri Lanka are Registered Yoga Schools (RYS 200), and graduates can register as RYT 200 teachers. Not every school is, so ask for the school's Yoga Alliance profile and check it on their website.

What is the difference between a 200-hour and 300-hour training?

A 200-hour is the foundational program open to anyone with an established practice. A 300-hour is advanced training for teachers who already hold a 200-hour certificate. It covers different material, such as deeper sequencing, anatomy and a specialty, not a repeat of the first course.

Do I need prior teaching experience?

No. Most schools ask for some months of regular practice, not teaching experience, and the training teaches you to teach. Check each listing for prerequisites, since 300-hour trainings require a 200-hour certificate.

What's typically included in the price?

It varies. All-inclusive courses cover tuition, manual, shared or private accommodation and most meals. Tuition-only courses include the manual and some meals, but accommodation and lunch are extra. Flights, visa and insurance are never included.

Which style should I choose: Vinyasa, Hatha or Yin?

Choose the style you want to teach. Vinyasa is the most common and the easiest to find work for. Hatha is slower and alignment-based. Yin is a good complement, and some courses combine Vinyasa and Yin in one 200-hour program.

Is a hybrid or online-plus-in-person course worth it?

It works well if you want to spend less time in Sri Lanka. You study theory such as anatomy, history and Ayurveda at home, then spend the on-site days on practice and teaching. The total price is often higher once accommodation is included, so compare the full cost.

Is a 300-hour training worth it after finishing a 200-hour?

If you want to deepen your teaching rather than repeat the foundation, yes. A real 300-hour covers advanced sequencing, injury-aware anatomy and a specialty, with a supervised practicum. Combined hours from registered 200 and 300-hour courses can meet Yoga Alliance's 500-hour level.

What are the deposit and cancellation terms?

A deposit of about 25%, or around €500, is common and is often non-refundable. The balance is due 30 to 60 days before the start. Some schools let you join the next training or any training within 12 months if you can't attend.

When is the best time to train in Sri Lanka?

The south coast is driest from about November to April, and most cohorts run in that window. Colombo airport is two to two and a half hours from Ahangama by car, and the Colombo to south coast train is the cheaper option.
